BET pulled out all the stops to celebrate the shining stars of the Hip Hop universe at this year's 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards. The 17th annual extravaganza took center stage on October 3, at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta, and was broadcast to audiences nationwide on the evening of October 10.
Fat Joe took the reins as the charismatic host, but the night undoubtedly belonged to none other than Kendrick Lamar. The prolific artist took home a stunning array of awards, dominating all four categories he was nominated in. Lamar's victories included the coveted titles of Hip Hop Artist Of The Year, Lyricist Of The Year, Best Live Performer, and Video Director Of The Year, an accolade he shared with his creative partner, Dave Free, through their collaborative platform, pgLang.
Meanwhile, Drake and 21 Savage made their mark by securing both the Best Duo/ Group award and the prestigious Hip Hop Album Of The Year for their remarkable album, "Her Loss." The mesmerizing track "All My Life" by Lil Durk and J. Cole triumphed in the Best Collaboration and Impact Track categories, while Lil Uzi Vert's electrifying hit "Just Wanna Rock" wowed audiences and earned the titles of Song Of The Year and Best Hip Hop Video.
A rising star in the Hip Hop realm, Ice Spice, took home the Best Breakthrough Hip Hop Artist award. The legendary JAY-Z earned the much-deserved Sweet 16 honor for his verse in "God Did", and the indomitable 50 Cent clinched the Hustler Of The Year Award. Other notable victors included the masterful producer Metro Boomin (awarded Producer Of The Year and DJ Of The Year), Caresha Please (recognized as the Best Hip-Hop Platform), and the internationally acclaimed Black Sherif (receiving the Best International Flow accolade).
The evening was punctuated by extraordinary performances and standout moments. Marley Marl graciously accepted the I Am Legend award, followed by an enthralling tribute performance from LL Cool J, who serenaded the audience with the classic track "Around The Way Girl." Additionally, the iconic Rakim delivered an electrifying rendition of "Paid In Full."
Jermaine Dupri paid homage to his legendary So So Def record label with a sensational medley featuring acts such as Ludacris, Nelly, Da Brat, Bow Wow, Chingy, and Lil Jon, among others.
The evening's excitement continued with a stellar lineup of performers, including DJ Drama, Fabolous, Jeezy, T.I., DaBaby, Sexyy Red, Juvenile, Mannie Fresh, GloRilla, Fivio Foreign, City Girls, and more. Swizz Beatz and Timbaland, the recipient of the Rock The Bells Cultural Influence Award, presided over the electrifying cyphers, showcasing the talents of Lola Brooke, Symba, Cassidy, Scar Lip, Foogieraw, Lady London, Gloss Up, and Bun B.
